The 70.000 sqm new construction project in Dorsten, situated on a revitalized mining site, serves as the European distribution center for Levi Strauss & Co. Adhering to LEED and WELL certifications, the building combines advanced logistics processes with modern sustainability principles based on the Cradle-to-Cradle concept.
The main building's dimensions are 220 x 272 meters. In the west, with a building height of around 27 meters, are the fully automated high-bay storage systems and additional picking and storage areas. The building is complemented in the east by a two-story picking area with a loading yard, as well as customization areas in the north, above which the two-story office and administration area with social rooms and a canteen is situated.
Architectural highlights of the distribution center include "The Wave" (FACID fabric with a steel substructure), a monumental external staircase surrounded by a pond leading to an impressive entrance portal, and rooftop gardens.
The exterior includes transformer stations with operating rooms, sprinkler systems, and a bicycle storage room. A waiting shelter for truck drivers near the parking spaces on the south side completes the overall picture.
In close collaboration with the client, the general contractor, and specialist planners, Phase 5 Architects undertook the execution planning of this complex project from December 2021 to February 2024.
The challenges included multifaceted requirements due to the diversity of materials, as well as the need to span large distances with prefabricated reinforced concrete elements.
